Objectives

Communication Research, Independent Study

The purpose of this course is to conduct original research on a topic related to communication. Your only ‘assignment’ for the course is a well-written 20-25 page paper, for 3 credits (approximately 250/words per page, double spaced) OR if you are enrolled in the course for 6 credits, you should count on a 40-45 paged paper. The research paper thus constitutes your main requirement for this course.

I hope that you will look upon the assignment as an opportunity to explore a specific area of interest to you within the context of communications.   Please note that this paper is not a research paper as you have done in Composition and Rhetoric, but an original contribution in which you look at what has been written on the topic, you then devise your own research, you carry out your research, collect data analyze data and write up your results.

There are many different ways of conducting and collecting research, here are a few:

• Interviews- talking to people, individually asking them questions you have devised, writing and recording their answers. It’s difficult to write down answers as they speak, which is why recording and transcribing later is optimal.
• Participant observation-watching and writing down. Being part of a group, but participating in the group and researching at the same time. Participant Observation is an established form of qualitative research and there are many academic articles on this method.
• Questionnaires/surveys- sending out questionnaires, or administrating them in person.
• Group interviews or focus groups-talking to people in a group setting, asking questions, recording and writing down answers.
