The first step in any process to obtain employment is to ensure that you meet the minimum requirements to apply. Most agencies require a lot before applying, others ask only that you have no criminal record and are of sound body and mind.

     One of the very first things that ask for is a POST certification. POST stands for Peace Officer Standards and Testing. The name of this certification varies from state to state, but it is the general standards that define who is and can be a police officer based on the approval of the state’s attorney general (Law Enforcement.com). Bigger agencies will have the funds and capability to run their own academy and certify their own officers. However, smaller agencies require individuals to be certified before applying. Police Academies will accept people who are not sponsored by an agency. Many community colleges run their own certified academies for those who want to be certified before looking for employment. A certification, along with proper higher education, is the starting point in the police recruitment process.
