CADV 460: Final Paper Sample Outline

You must select 3 of the following identities to discuss, analyze, and research in your final paper:
Culture: Values, traditions, etc. such as being Jewish, Chicano/a Culture, American, etc. In this case you can talk about how your culture is represented in school or institutions and what implications this has had for you.
Race: For example being Black, White, Asian, Biracial, etc. Remember if you are discussing race then your paper should be on your experience with race (e.g., phenotype, appearance, etc.) within certain contexts, not to be confused with your ethnicity. This is a good place to discuss your racial privilege or lack thereof.
Ethnicity: For example identifying as Mexican-American, Armenian, Indian, etc. If you are discussing ethnicity then you should be referencing how your ethnic background (e.g., language, history, values, etc.) has impacted you within certain contexts.
Sex: Your biological assignment of whether you are male, female, or intersex. That means you should only discuss what’s it’s like to be given this category and the treatment that’s associated with this physical look, since you have no choice in what your sex is. You can also discuss how you think you ascribe to the attached sex roles and what implications this has for you. This is a good place to talk about male privilege or lack thereof.
Gender: These are your attitudes, feelings, and behaviors about how you perceive whether you are a boy, girl, transgender, etc. This is your private sense of your gender identity. In this case you could discuss how you experience gender internally, how you express it to others, and how this has impacted your experiences.
Sexual Orientation: The gender(s) of the people that a person is attracted to, physically or emotionally. In this case you can discuss what it’s like to identify as the sexual orientation of your choosing. Are there stigmas attached or do you fit the societal norm, how does this influence how others interact or perceive you?
Immigration Status: In this case you could discuss whether you are U.S. born or an immigrant to this country and how this has shaped your experiences. You can also discuss how acculturated you feel and how this has impacted your schooling and home life experiences.
Visible or invisible disability: A visible disability is something that others can see like missing a limb or being blind. However, there are also many invisible disabilities that are more covert like having dyslexia or a mood disorder. In this case, you should discuss how this disability has impacted your educational progress, how you cope with it, and how it differs in certain contexts.
Generational Status: Everyone has a generational status (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd) of being in this country. In this case you can discuss how your generational status has influenced you and whether you perhaps have a generational status clash with your parents that shaped how you grew up. Moreover, how this has influenced your schooling.
Birth Order: For many people being first born in comparison to being born last or somewhere in the middle of your siblings plays a significant role in your upbringing. In this case you can discuss how being the youngest, for example, provided you with more or less liberties.
Religion: For example, Catholic, Muslim, Christian, etc. In this case you will want to focus on how your belief system shaped your values, schooling, and upbringing.
Other Category: If you can think of another identity you’d like to discuss that is relevant to this class but not mentioned above you can also discuss this. However, you must email me to get this approved first. Use the following structure as an outline or guide to start your paper

iv) Neighborhood
v) Etc…
e) How has this identity influenced you?
f) Have you had any realizations over time or in the present about this identity’s impact?
Don’t forget to have a good transition sentence between each identity. If there’s some overlap between these then this is a good time to discuss them. For example, if being a male and being
Black has different societal expectations or implications than being Black and female then this is a good time to discuss this.

f) Have you had any realizations overtime or in the present about this identity’s impact?
Don’t forget to have a good transition sentence between each identity. Discussing the intersection of two identities is key here. How does one influence the other?
