Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart focuses on the events that take place in one family’s kitchen over a two-day period. When the play starts out my character, Meg hasn’t even made it back to the small town of Hazlehurst, Mississippi where the play takes place. She has been living out in Hollywood, CA for the past 5 years attempting to make a singing career for herself. However, around Christmas time she had a mental breakdown, lost her job and was committed to a mental facility. The “Black Sister” of the family, Meg was a spoiled child that was never denied anything she wanted. When the girls’ mother hung herself and the old cat it was Meg who discovered them. This event made her feel like a weak person and she tried various methods of strengthening herself. For example, Babe tells us that she used to spend hours in the library looking at a book called Diseases of the Skin. She would also go down to the Dime store and look at the posters of crippled children (I am assuming on the March of Dimes poster), and then she would spend her dime on ice cream and claim that she could resist them. However, when she was carted off to the mental hospital she was caught trying to shove all her money, jewelry and other valuables into the donation box. Meg has quite a history in Hazlehurst. She used to be a singer at the local pub/bar called Greenys. She is also responsible for the injury that Doc Porter has sustained. Five years before they had both been in Biloxi when Hurricane Camille hit. Because of Meg’s persistence that she face the storm and Doc’s love for her, they both found themselves in the direct path of the hurricane. When it was over Meg left for Hollywood without saying goodbye and Doc was left with a leg injury and a desire to practice medicine no more. While on her brief trip to Hazlehurst she invites Doc over to the house where he talks her
