asia 395 folk cultures in the asian diaspora
writing assignment guidelines
assignments #2, 5
in this course, you’ll be asked to produce two written assignments, to be submitted through
turnitin.com to guard against plagiarism. to do so, please visit turnitin.com and establish an
account, and then join the class called “asia 395 – 2016” with the following:
class ID = 13671154
enrollment password = folklore
once you are in the class, you will see two assignments – assignment 2 and assignment 5. you
can upload your submissions in DOC, PDF, RTF or other document formats.
written assignments
the idea of the written assignments is to communicate your research results, based on both
(a) primary sources that you have collected [items of folklore, consultant interviews, etc.] and
also (b) secondary sources that have been written by folklorists.
some tips: a.] the language you use in the writing assignments should be scholarly, but it
should still be your own voice. that means: don’t use fancy language just for the sake of
sounding scholarly, but only when discussing key concepts, theories, or ideas.
b.] focus on defending your arguments. everything that you claim (e.g., “The Panjabi
community in Vancouver especially values bhangra dance competitions.”) should be backed
up by evidence (e.g., “For example, such-and-such thousands of people attended the VIBF
competition last year in downtown Vancouver.”) Without this evidence, your writing will be
judged as non-scholarly.
c.] the style of your papers should be as straightforward as possible. don’t start with vague or
difficult to defend introductory sentences about how “People generally value happiness over
sadness,” or that “Religion is one of the most cherished values of the Chinese people.”
instead start with your own observations, or a quote, or a question, or a puzzle to solve.
d.] formatting. your written submissions should all be double-spaced, 12-point Times New
Roman or equivalent font, 1-inch margins, left-justified, with no cover page, and just the
following in the upper right hand side of the page, single-spaced:
First Name Last Name, Student ID
Clever Title
Assignment Number, ASIA 395, Winter 2016
for citation, please use inline paranthetical format: so, after a quote, give: (Author Surname,
“Article Title,” Page Number) or (Author Surname, Book Title, Page Number). so, for example:
“Who are the folk? Among others, we are!” (Dundes, “Who Are the Folk?,”19)
there is no need for bibliography, unless you are citing works that are not part of the
assigned readings (in which case, please use MLA or Chicago style).
grading rubrics
for the writing assignments, you will be graded according to the following criteria:
• content (40%) – how well does your writing address the topic question? do you
demonstrate a familiarity with the readings?
• argument (40%) — are your claims reasonable? how well are you defending your
claims with concrete evidence from the readings or from fieldwork?
• writing style (20%) — are you following proper citation methods and formatting? is
your writing clear or convoluted? are there too many spelling mistakes?
schedule
you will be asked to make three blog posts and two written submissions (through
turnitin.com). the schedule & topics are as follows:
• [blog post #1, due friday 9.23: self-collection of three items of folklore.]
• assignment #2, due monday 10.3: a written reflection on weeks 1-4.
through the first four weeks of ASIA 395, you have been given basic training for
becoming a folklorist. based on what you have learned so far, please write a 3-5 page
reflection in which you discuss (a) what you believe folklore is, (b) how you should
study folklore, and (c) why studying the folklore (or perhaps hybrid traditions) of an
Asian Canadian community in Vancouver might be a good thing. be specific, use
concrete examples and cite your readings to support the claims that you make.
• [blog post #3, due tuesday, 10.11: a digital media sample interview.]
• [blog post #4, due tuesday, 10.18: a contextual study of a folkloric culture.]
• assignment #5, due tuesday 11.1: a research base for your midterm paper.
this assigment asks you to produce a 2-3 page research base for your midterm
paper, consisting of the following: (a) research notes on at least 3 of the 7 readings on
Asian Canadian folklore assigned between 10.3 and 10.27, which would include your
reflections on the main points of the article and some key quotes to use in your paper.
(b) a brief brainstorm of your paper topic, and how it will tie into the digital media
project. {topic and project will be developed through discussion with your instructor}
