As part of a graduate level methods course, it is important to practice conducting scholarly research regarding a topic in the communication studies discipline. For this project, students will be asked to conduct a preliminary study of a media artifact for this class, submitting a project proposal, an extended list of references (annotated bibliography), a detailed outline of the project, and a final paper. Students should also present the findings of their original research at the end of the semester.

To begin this project, students should select a media artifact that they would like to study. This artifact can be any number of things: an episode(s) of television, a season of television, an entire television series, a movie, several related movies, a song(s), an album, an artists’ entire body of work, etc. Whatever you choose, you should consider two things: 1) what is the question you want to ask about this artifact or the argument you’d like to make, being able to define it in clear language, and 2) is this a reasonable amount of work to analyze in an 8-week course? After you have selected an artifact, begin conducting preliminary research on the artifact to see if other high quality, credible academic research has been conducted. This research should include peer-reviewed journal articles, not press publications (though those are ok to use for contextual info, like box office sales, chart numbers, etc.). Using the preliminary research you have done, propose your study, which should fill a gap in the literature (i.e. not replicate research that has already been done). In this proposal, please make sure to identify at least one feminist concept to use to study the artifact, as well as one media theory. You should also clarify what kind of broad method of analysis you will use (e.g. rhetorical, cultural, feminist, etc.). This research proposal should clearly identify the artifact, the feminist concept, the media theory, and the criticism method you’ll use. You should also clearly identify a research question or thesis for this project (see this website for guidance on writing a research question as opposed to a thesis: https://libguides.gwu.edu/research/question). Combined together, this will make up the Final Project Proposal, which should be submitted in the Unit Two: Sex learning unit by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. (Grad students should seek to write 2-3 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt font, while undergrads should write 1-2 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt font.)
