[for example’s sake only, the cultures that a student chooses may be the koran contrasted with sappho or “the old chief mshlanga”; or eliot or mahfouz contrasted with achebe; or medea with hamlet or sor juana; or douglass with antigone or st. augustine. be imaginative and challenge yourself. the more contrast the essay gets into the mix, the better. but no matter what the case may be, the student should write the essay entirely in the third person, in good objective/academic fashion, drawing on textual evidence, as we have been doing all semester.
