Take notes on the details of arguments Gore gives for the seriousness of the problem of adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere through burning carbon for energy creation. A good deal of the video deals with Gore’s life. You need not be interested in those details in your work for the week. Concentrate on the evidence he gives for the claim that the planet is warming at a very dangerous rate and that carbon dioxide emissions are the cause of the warming. While you watch the video, make an outline of several of Gore’s arguments. Get down some of the facts and figures he uses.
You may find it helpful to review your understanding of the carbon cycle by visiting the NASA site. Go to www.NASA.gov: Search – The Carbon Cycle, watch “Keeping Up With Carbon” and “Watching Earth Breath”.
C. Critical Thinking Assignment
Discuss: Challenging Gore’s Argument and the two videos.
Activity:
Challenge the Gore argument.
Steps:
Go on the Internet and find at least one article that claims that: the planet is not warming at a dangerous rate. OR burning fossil fuels is not the cause of global warming. OR science just doesn’t know if the planet is warming dangerously. OR science just doesn’t know the cause of the planet warming, if it is warming. An article addressing any one of these, or all of them, is just fine. You shouldn’t have much trouble finding an article which represents the interests of the petroleum industry.
1. Use the information in your article to write a one-page, double-spaced paper in which you try to prove that Gore is wrong in one or several of his arguments. Do the best you can to poke holes in his argument(s). Cite the article you found, using the proper documentation style. Include the date you accessed the article and the date it was posted (if you can find that information).
2. Post your one-page paper on the discussion board. Your paper can earn up to 4 points.
4. Discuss environmental problems about your country profile choice and earn up to 3 points for a total of 10 points. (Albania)
