After reading Chapter 9 of Hired! and complete the exercise 9.6. The first thing I would do is look at the packaging of the product. You want to make sure the package stands out the customer, make it different. I would also look at the product itself, make sure it looks correct then look for different spices to try out on that product. Next, I would look into the target population, who are they? I would get this information by asking grocery stores. Mother’s mainly do the food shopping and want what’s best for their family so I would look into targeting them. Many people look into Non-GMO organic products, I think this is extremely important in a product. This may just be a trend going around but it is a trend that seems to be sticking so I would target that as well. I would also need to analyze the company’s marketing budget. Many companies want their name everywhere, so commercials, newspaper ads, website ads would all be extremely important to get a product out there. I would make sure the local grocery stores were advertising the product as well, make it well known. If people start seeing it and buying it they will tell other people about the product which means more sales. Having a sale on the new product will also make people want to buy it or look into it more. Gaining the customer base will have more people want to know or buy the product, word of mouth can be the best sale sometimes. I believe if the company is also capable of making another product besides just meat the customers would enjoy that. Examples loaves of bread or spices to go with their product. Knowing the company can do more than one thing would make the customers happy.

Due to the recent decline in the deli meat market, arrangements have to be made in order to continue running the business, stay in competition with other local distributers of deli meat, and make a reasonable profit. What we are trying to determine, is if the same advertisement and promotion campaigns were kept constant, why was there a decrease in profit sales. In order to answer this question, all aspects of the situation must be analyzed.

Upon being hired to investigate this matter, I was informed that, there are three other meat competitors known in the area, each meat company has sliced deli meats at three different price levels: Generic, mid-level, and premium, and it was also brought to my attention that a majority of the market share loss was the premium category for the business I’ve just been hired by.

A survey was conducted on the meat consumers, and results identified that there is an inconsistency with their product then that of the competition with the premium meats, therefore some of the customers have switched over to the competition.

In order to fix this issue, the deli meat needs to be addressed, specifically the premium meat department. From here, I want to know is where the meat is coming from before it gets to our location, the farm it raised on, and the living conditions of the animal. Environment plays a huge role in the health of a living-being, and these factors can play a role in the overall product and cause these inconsistency’s mentioned. After this has been determined, I would construct a free meat testing to the first 100 customers to find out which meat was there favorite. This will not only help us determine the best pick for our business, bring in business at the same time(hopefully). After the results are in, the meat that was the favorite will now be sold as our “new premium” and advertise it as such.

In order for this firm to start making profit from the premium meats category I would advise to advertise how the quality is better than competitors. It did mention that some customers said the quality did not vary amongst competitors but by instilling a catchy phrase or motto promoting these particular premium meats, it will stay in the customers subconscious and when they are in the grocery store or deli they will remember this particular brand and be more inclined to ask for it. Another recommendation I have is possibly up-selling. By promoting buying one premium meats and getting another for free will have more customers reaching for this special and trying out other meats. This may spark customers interest and maybe have them find another meat that they love and will continue purchasing.

Any of these two marketing ideas will somehow spark the interest of customers. Promoting these specials while the other competitors continue to do nothing to change their advertisement will make this firm stick out. Customers will remember the specials and be more inclined to choose this brand over the others that have no special advertisement. I know if I was at a deli and I saw a commercial from one specific brand while I have never really heard of the other, I would be more intrigued to reach for the one that I know. Also if I knew one specific brand and their catchphrase I would choose that one just because of the catchphrase. A lot of customers tend to think like this and the company should be more aware of how they are marketing since the competitors don’t seem to be changing many marketing techniques.

In my opinion, the question of is it better to be a generalist or a specialist can go both ways. First, it’s great to be a generalist within the healthcare field because you have a more broad approach to the job you are in and you can most likely help many different people who have different problems. Also, other doctors and nurses would be able to come to you for different questions or if they need help with something. On the other hand, a specialist is often very knowledgeable in their specific area and are able to just focus on that in order to  have the best diagnosis and treatment in that area. You will be able to know right away what to do with someone with a condition that involves your specific area and have them cured. Both a generalist and a specialist are very essential, especially in healthcare.

Jobs within my tentative discipline and area of interest include: Community Health Coordinator, Public Health Nurse, Health Administrator, Labor & Delivery Nurse

Some specialities within my tentative area of study would include a Labor & Delivery nurse because they are mainly focused on dealing with the childbirth process and caring for the mother during labor. An Epidemiologist within public health is a specialty because their main focus is the studying of disease and how they come about.  A public health nurse is also a specialty because they cater to entire populations and aren’t just based in doctors offices or hospitals.

Generalist options within my tentative field of study is an RN. General Registered Nurses work anywhere between hospitals, doctors offices, nursing homes or care facilities. They cater to about anyone and don’t have a specific speciality.  A Director of Health in a Health Department can be a generalist option because although they fall under health administration, they oversee all divisions within a department.

In your opinion, is it better to be a generalist or specialist?                                                           A generalist- A person that possesses skills in a variety of fields and activities.                     A specialist- A person who has been excessively trained in one specific area and has become successful at this specific task.

There are advantages and disadvantages of both positions that vary from job to job, however in the world of dental hygiene, a generalist best suits the duties that are performed by the hygiene professionals.  Studies have shown that the oral health has a direct effect on the over-all health of the individual. That being said, it is to our advantage that we have been educated on surfaces farther then the mouth while in school. Generalizing and gaining knowledge in the head and body which enables us to properly care for our patients, modify treatment, and talk to other health care professionals effectively.

Write down several areas or jobs within your tentative discipline or area of interest Public Health and Clinical settings

Think of several specialties within your tentative area of studyThe jobs listed above are within the scope of practice of a dental hygienist. Specialties can benefit each area of discipline. Having a specialty in public health will make you an expert at collecting the information needed on the history, environment, and well-being of a particular community. In the clinical setting it is important to be competent in identifying health from disease, how to articulate this to the patients effectively, and how to use instrumentation tools for effective debris removal.

Think of several generalists’ options within your tentative area of studyGeneralists are also found to benefit the areas of study listed above. Public health requires a collection of data, as mentioned, but the individual must be able to analyze it after being collected. This requires two tasks which can already be considered generalizing. As for clinic setting, aside from debridement and identifying disease in the mouth, we educate patients on techniques for proper homecare, place sealants that act as a protective barrier from harmful bacteria and administer local anesthetics to block pain receptors.

Considering the ever-changing world we live in, you never know what could happen to derail your career or your future plans. It is important to be prepared for a sudden loss of job security. This includes having substantial savings in the bank to absorb any living expenses until new accommodations can be made, as well as having a backup plan for a career path that can support your means for the time being. Being a specialist has its ups and downs, in terms of the medical field, being a specialist shows that you are highly intelligent in your topic of focus and in turn gain a great pay for your expertise. However, if something were to happen and the job security you once had was now lost, what could you fall back on?

I think that being a generalist can be beneficial in times of an economical plummet, your career might be in a general topic, therefore possessing knowledge of all aspects of the job. In this scenario, you could easily take on another position. Realistically speaking, a generalist may even have greater career flexibility and wider opportunities based off of their ability to demonstrate multiple different roles and responsibilities.

In my field of study, there are many different branches of dentistry in which specialize. These types of dentists include implant surgeons, periodontists, endodontists, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and general dentistry. These are all areas in which a dentist decided to further their expertise in their field. Some generalist options in the dental field would be to work in a general dentist office, this office can do a little bit of everything. Therefore being able to offer more to their patients and maintain their client databases.

Long-term professional goals of mine are to continue my education. By the year 2012 I wish to earn a master’s degree in either dental hygiene or counseling and by the year 2020 I wish to land two part-time jobs. One being in a private pediatric dental office, and the other being in public health setting.  

Long-term social goals of mine would be to get connected with those with the same goals as I do in order to make a difference and to perfect my patient treatment and communication. By joining the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), goals that are set can be accomplished. On the website, you can find several benefits of joining this association includingproviding the highest quality patient care by becoming notified of new tends and CE courses available, and to develop meaningful personal and professional relationship for the greater good.

In order to fulfill these goals, I am aware that by joining the ADHA, I will have a great chance of doing so. In addition to staying connected, it would be beneficial to set weekly or even monthly goals and keep a log of obstacles and hard conversations I’ve faced and how each was overcome for future motivation.

Short term goals include processing paperwork to the state of CT in order to officially become registered as a dental hygienist and to land a job briefly at a temp agency. The reasoning behind this is to gain experience seeing how different dental practices are ran, the expectations of different dentists, and to finally seamless transition into an office of my choosing. By meeting these short term-goals, will I then be able to accomplish further goals I have set for my future.

Having goals you set for yourself is essential in reaching success. Your goals are your motivators for you to get to where you want to be. With that being said, my long-term social goals would be to network as much as I can within my career field. Doing this will be able to open doors to many opportunities that will come my way throughout my journey in the medical field. I would like to get to know as many people as I can and leave a good impression.  Although school, education and my career is very important to me, I want to be able I’m making time for family and friends and not be so absorbed  in my aspirations. It’s also important to have balance in your life because it will help you not get so burnt out with schooling and your career. Long-term goals I have that are for my professional career is to get my master’s degree in public health or nursing. Ultimately, I would love to get my doctorate as well because I love the power that more education and knowledge brings me. I always love learning new things and becoming more educated so my long-term goals will definitely reflect that. 

Short-term goals I would like to reach is to get a good full-time job after I graduate this December. My goal settings to work in would be first a hospital and second a health department. Norwalk hospital and health department really appeals to me because they are a very organized and well-developed city. I would love to work there post-graduation. One of my best friends also works at Norwalk hospital as a Nurse Educator so I have a great connection there. I’m hoping I’ll be able to reach these goals by Spring 2020 because the faster I get a job the faster I can further my education and career.

Life is all about balance, the right balance between all aspects of life is essential to feeling as though you are fulfilled. A big issue that I think most of use have experienced in college was struggling to find balance in our lives. At times, it can be very difficult to do this because you are forced to chose which one is more important. In college, it seemed that the social lives, leisure time, and recreational activities all got put on the back burner because education was more important. However, after graduation, it seemed easier to finally gain some balance back into my life. The years of sacrifice abruptly came to a halt as I found myself, finally, with the time that I had sacrificed to school for the past years.

Family is a huge part of my life, they are the backbone to my existence and my constant supporters. My family means so much to me, not having the time to attend the birthday parties, the Sunday dinners, or even the occasional movie night was so hard for me to endure. The incredible feeling of missing out was unbearable. However, now that I have completed my dental hygiene program, I am able to find balance and time to be with my family. I have found myself attending every opportunity to spend time with them since then and it is an amazing feeling.

Understanding which aspects of your life are out of balance is so important when trying to distinguish where you need to dedicate more time. Monopolizing your time with one factor, such as work or a significant other, will inevitably leave you feeling empty and unfulfilled. Long term, I plan on having a monthly game night with all my friends, attend all my family events, never pass up opportunities to do something new, and I will always make time for my own self-care.
