Packinghouse Daughter is a memoir authored by Register Cheri. The Minnesota Historical Society published Packinghouse Daughter in 2010. Cheri was born in 1945. She is a teacher and an established author. In her famous book, Packinghouse Daughter, Cheri unveils a memoir focusing on her upbringing in a working class family. Cheri Register writes about a sudden onset of a violent strike in the ever quite town of Albert Lea in Minnesota. Register gives an unfolding of a public memoir while at the same time giving an account of her personal life. The book includes oral interviews an extensive historical research (Register, 2010). Register gives her account as a daughter to a striking worker in the town of Albert Lea. The strike in mention took place sometime in the late 1950s and it involved workers of a local meatpacking plant. The memoir brings to life the events during a violent strike in the small town of Albert Lea of Minnesota. Register recounts the events leading to the strike, the period of the strike and its implications then touches on the aftermath of it. She gives an account of the life of the workers of the meatpacking industry of the small town. The memoir touches on the social class and its impact on breakage of ties among those of different socio-economic class. Register’s book touches on the lifestyle of the rich and those of lower social class and gives a picture of the brewing hatred between these two worlds. Cheri visited her father’s workplace, Wilson & Co. through a school organized trip. Most of the workers there consisted of the mid-class citizens that toiled to fend for their families (Register, 2010). Her father was always worked up every day. This private and at the same time public memoir gives a classic view into the social class issue. Cheri describes a violent strike that ensued in the small town when the meatpacking firm swapped the union workers for strikebreakers. The strike gives an in-depth view into the issue of classes as it were in the mid-1900s. Cheri Register brings out a number of thematic concerns in her book. Perhaps of the greatest interest remain to be conflict and social classes. Conflict is a major sociologic concept brought out in this book. Cheri describes a strike by the working class members at Wilson & Co.
