Working with Survivors of Domestic Violence: The Case of Charo
Social justice is assuring the protection of equal access to liberties, rights, and opportunities along with taking care of the least advantage members of society. Per Rawls, “determining social justice depends on factors of promoting or hindering equality of access to civil liberties, human rights, opportunities for healthy and fulfilling lives, and allocating a fair share of benefits to the least advantaged members of society.” (Rawls, 2009)
Charo is a single 34-year old Hispanic mother. She is unemployed and has five children. Charo is originally from Mexico and does not speak English nor have a visa to work. She’s a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse. In Charo’s case, there’s evident social justice issues regarding discrimination, unequal wealth and resource distribution, access to health care and education, and labor laws.
Two strategies Charo may implement to address the social issue mentioned includes applying for federal housing programs and unemployment insurance. To be eligible for federal housing program, only one member in her household must be a citizen. Under the VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) special immigration protection is provided for victims of domestic violence whom are not U.S citizens. Per Broder, “federal housing laws requires assistance provided to people with limited English skills to ensure they have meaningful access to housing or other programs.” (Broder, 2011) The second strategy of employment insurance such as PRUCOL is a based period wages for immigrants permanently resigned in the U.S.
