HIST 221 SLAVERY AND EMANCIPATION IN BELIZE
This course covers the main theme of the experience of Belizean people through slavery and emancipation. It examines the origins of slavery in the Caribbean, the Atlantic Slave trade, the practice of slavery, the movement to end slavery, the Emancipation Act, the introduction of Apprenticeship, the labour problems and immigration. These major issues will be examined on a local level yet within the context of the experiences of Caribbean People in general.

Intended Learning Outcomes
Students successfully completing this should be able to
1.attain and demonstrate a better understanding of some of the main events that shaped Belizean Society as a part of the wider Caribbean during the period of transition from a slave to a free society.
- utilize their knowledge of and understand the origins and impact of slavery in general, slavery in the Caribbean and slavery in Belize, the role of individuals and institutions in the fight against slavery, the role of conditions and movements that facilitated the antislavery sentiment and the new institutions created to answer the problems of a new society.
3.attain and develop the skill to critically analyze the events that pushed Belizean and Caribbean Society out of slavery to emancipation.
4.They will be able to describe and explain the behaviors and interactions among individuals such as John Alexander, groups such as the Maroons, institutions such as the church, events such as the slave revolts and ideas such as those of Laissez Faire(Adam Smith).
5.examine the actions taken by slaves in Belize to bring about their own freedom(passive and active resistance.
6.develop and improve reading, critical thinking, and writing skills in relation to historical knowledge, issues and the analysis of primary and secondary sources develop the ability to competently and objectively address the issues facing humanity today
7.improve their own intellectual self reliance

Attendance at each class is required. To be marked present you must arrive at the beginning of the class and remain until the end of the period .Absences and tardiness will affect learning, is disruptive to other students and will certainly affect the final grade. Students who accumulate more than twenty percent absences will be asked to withdraw from the course or have their final grade brought one letter down. Consult with your instructor in case of emergencies. Only absences due to official, university-sanctioned activities will be excused. Attendance, punctuality, effort, cooperation and creativity will be considered when assessing student performance for this class.
