1.You will need to be able to discuss the two films in the context of the Surrealist movement including the dates of the films, possible motivation(s) of the directors, striking images, why the films are significant contributions to the movement and what they were critiquing. Please also be prepared to compare and contrast the two films including details such as images, sound, plot, characters, length, and themes.
2.André Breton’s Second Manifesto of Surrealism (1930). Please be prepared to discuss the Manifesto like you did for your Essay 1 and relate it to the goals and challenges of Surrealism. Also be able to discuss Breton’s attraction to the “exotic” and possible implications. What challenges did Breton face? How does he conclude in the Prolegomena to a Third Surrealist Manifesto (1942) and On Surrealism in its Living Works (1953)?
3.Pablo Picasso- Le desire attrapé par la queue (1945) (Desire Caught by the Tail). Be prepared to discuss the play in terms of the historical context, including who or what the characters might represent and why. Be able to write about the presence or absence of plot and what Picasso’s motivations could have been for writing the play in this way. What might the “soup”, “villa”, “jackpots” and other images represent? And the title?

6.Surrealism and Mexico, Surrealism and Women- Frida Kahlo- How did the art of women artists associated with the Surrealist movement differ from that of male Surrealists? Why? Be able to explain who Frida Kahlo was and her relationship to the Surrealist movement, including 2-3 of her most famous works and what techniques she used to create them.
