Given your experience and these readings, what do you think is the strategic role of IT? How do you see it implemented in your area of a business/organization? Fedex, Walmart, and other organizations have created their success in large part because they used technology to give them an advantage that was hard to duplicate. It took years for other retailers to catch up because of the complexity and cost of the implementations. Newer companies such as Amazon, Google, and others exist almost entirely in virtual worlds. They set their missions early on, and because of their ambition and tenacity, they can dominate the marketplace for a long time and can put competitors out of business (such as neighborhood bookstores). In the large majority of organizations, the use of IT does not provide a competitive advantage anymore, but rather represents the cost of doing business and keeping up with competitors. CIOs have to work harder to identify ways of adding value to an organization and to provide more value by streamlining the organizations. How would you evaluate the points made in these articles?
