What is the American Dream?

A unitary definition does not exist- the American Dream probably has a different meaning to every U.S. citizen. For some, it is the dream of freedom and equality. For others, it is the dream of a fulfilled life or even the dream of fame and wealth.

In general, the American Dream can be defined as being the opportunity and freedom for all citizens to achieve their goals and become rich and famous if only they work hard enough. But again this is a very general definition.

History of the American Dream

The first settlers hoped for freedom of religion; in their home country they had been persecuted because of their religion and political views. Bad living conditions in Europe and the hope for better living standards in America attracted more and more settlers to migrate to the new world. The booming U.S. industry later caused people to believe in the myth “from rags to riches.” We also see the various cultural struggles to achieve the American Dream during the different times in history which we will discuss throughout this class.

The American Dream today

Today’s role of the American Dream is a matter of discussion. Some think that the American Dream is still a viable element today, for others it is only an illusion.

The American Dream focuses on the success of the individual and is based on the identity of the person trying to achieve the dream. This concept is not based on the wellbeing of the whole population. This can have various disadvantages for society. There is no social fondness for the poor and no serious interest in important issues like environmental protection.

Discussion of the American Dream (for Research)

The American Dream is often a topic for essays or debates.

• Is the American Dream still alive?
• Is the American Dream still working?
• Is the American Dream still worth pursuing?
• How does the way that people identify themselves play into whether or not they feel that the dream is for them?

For this research paper, you should first give your definition of the American Dream as the basis of your paper and build off of your concept since there is no tried and true proven definition. You should also base some of your arguments on whether or not the American Dream still exist or whether or not it is still worth pursuing based on  how the American Dream has changed according to the many stories we have read in class which directly tie in to this. You can choose to look at one particular aspect of this dream like as it applies to minorities like African Americans, Native Americans or women. You can also look at it as society as a whole and the problems we have today versus the problems in history like debt, religious freedom, and political views.
