Randolph Bourne’s “Twilight of Idols,” and John Dewey’s “The Social Possibility of War,” both examine philosophies in relation to the Progressive Era and the First World War. Bourne’s philosophy is more in-depth and includes a description of one of Dewey’s philosophies and how he ultimately disagrees because “Dewey’s philosophy is inspiring enough for a society at peace, prosperous and with a fund of progressive good-will (p1).” The position that Bourne takes exceeds Dewey’s because he backs up his philosophy by explaining that the disciples of Dewey “have learned all too literally the instrumental attitude towards life, and, being immensely intelligent and energetic, they are all making themselves efficient instruments of the war-technique, accepting with little question the ends as announced from above (p1).” He explains that a change in the instrumental philosophy will require malcontents, who are those “who could not stomach the w………………….
