DONALD TRUMP CAMPAIGN PROMISES

As we’ve discussed in class, Donald Trump was a very unorthodox presidential candidate:
not part of the political establishment, not a longstanding member of a political party, and not
ideological in his orientation to policy issues. He ran a non-traditional campaign of almost
exclusively large arena media events, giving speeches and participating in debates with a
bombastic rhetorical style that excited and inspired some voters while horrifying and disgusting
others. And he will be the only U.S. President in the history of our republic to have neither a
record of service in the U.S. military nor a record or public service as an elected official. What
Donald Trump will have in common with all his modern predecessors, however, is a long list of
campaign promises made to the American people during his presidential campaign.
This paper assignment requires students to consider some of Donald Trump’s biggest and
most often repeated campaign promises and then to write an essay that addresses either one of
following two topic options:
Option A: Will President Trump have the ability to keep his campaign promises?
To adequately address this topic, students should write an essay that addresses the
following:
 Identify and present Trump’s biggest, most often repeated campaign promises
 Select several (at least 3) policy promises and for each explain:
– what powers/sources of influence will Trump have, as President, to make his
campaign promise a reality? Does the President, alone, have the necessary power
to bring about the promised policy?
– In our system of federalism, separation of powers, checks and balances, and
treaties, will the President need the cooperation of institutional, international,
political, or other allies to keep his promise? Are there other relevant players on the
issue that could affect Trump’s ability to keep his promise?
– Do you predict Trump will be able to implement his policy promises? Explain why
or why not.

Option B: Is President-elect Trump still expressing firm commitment to his campaign
promises?
To adequately address this topic, students should write an essay that addresses the
following:
 Identify and present Trump’s biggest, most often repeated campaign promises
 For which of his biggest campaign promises has Trump continued to express
commitment since winning the election? Discuss.
 For which of his biggest campaign promises is Trump no longer expressing a firm
commitment since winning the election? Discuss. Describe how Trump’s policy
specifics have changed on these promises.
 Analyze and discuss the reasons why Trump may be recanting some of his campaign
promises while holding firm to others.
Papers will be graded based on (1) how clearly and accurately Trump’s campaign
promises are presented (2) how well-researched and well-reasoned the analysis is (3) how well
the essay is organized and written.

Format:
Papers should be up to 3 pages in length, with 1½ line-spacing, standard 1-inch margins,
12-point standard font. The essay should also include citations for sources.
