Keeping in mind the general description, we want something that can support discussion of information processing and ecological
perception views of interface design. You are asked to consider how these factors influence design decisions. An application that
makes that easier would be one that has en environmental aspect and human information processing requirements. Applications can
be developed for one or more platforms of choice — smartphone, desktop, tablet, even wearables (e.g. iWatch)
General Description:
The 2013 SIAT curriculum review concluded that SIAT students should work to develop a design practice that is consistent with
scientific evidence. Because science is complex, and its application in design a challenge, IAT201 covers a broad range of material.
IAT 201 presents scientific debates (e.g. Information processing vs ecological perspectives) and key findings from psychology research
(e.g. trichomacy vs opponency in colour) within the context of theories of technology design (Simon, Schön, Arthur) and learning
theory (Bloom, Perry).
Topic:
Exploring the outdoors: British Columbia is full of outdoor enthusiasts and provides a diverse set of opportunities for outdoor activities,
ranging from backcountry skiing to scuba diving, hiking, surfing, kayaking and canoeing.
Scenario 1: You are part of a startup company that seeks to build applications to meet the diverse needs of this market. You
have convinced your backers that your group of ex-IAT201 students has the depth of knowledge of human perception, cognition and
social interaction that you have a chance to compete against the bigger players. Now your company has enough seed funding to
develop a “killer ap” that will show that you can get enough traction (downloads, sales) from a target group of current or potential
outdoor enthusiasts that you can make your case for a larger investment.
Scenario 2: You are working with an environmental organization that seeks to support the wise use of the outdoors. Many novice and
some experienced outdoors enthusiasts are using the outdoors like a gym, without regard to the need to preserve the natural
environment. Previous attempts to educate the public using conventional media (TV, fliers, ads) have not had much of an impact. Your
organization has asked you to develop a new media approach to this, which may involve multiple media including apps. Success
would be measured by reduced impact on the environment as well as contributions from users to the organization.
Learning Objectives and Deliverables
This assignment will help you practice:
• describing two major themes of the course
• reflecting on your design practice and how it might be informed by psychological science
• organizing and articulating your thought in a concise piece of reflective writing
• thinking of psychological theory and methods in terms of its application to your personal practice
This assignment is intended as an informed personal reflective exercise. As such we would like to see individual understandings,
reflection and applications of the class material. We are particularly interested in gaps that you perceive, and links that should be made
to make the material more comprehensible and more useful.
