“How much power do race and ethnicity play in our culture today? Do opportunities for majorities differ markedly from those for minorities?
According to a video on YouTube by Professor Scott Muller, Muller argues that race is not real. He states that it’s something man have created to judge people by the color of their skin, and that the correct term is ethnicity. Ethnicity and race play a major role in our culture today. Whether people realize it or not, it’s how others view us. Although it’s better today than then what it was several years ago, some people may still see it differently. As a society, we tend to watch a lot of television and let the media decide how we treat and think of one another. 70% of infants in the U.S spend over 2 hours per day in front of a screen. (Rideout, Vandewater, &Wartell, 2003) Opportunities for majorities are most certainly differently than the opportunities for minorities. We are exposed to different lifestyles and influences. I know this because I just happen to be a minority and come from nothing. I also know firsthand that it’s not the type of cards you are dealt with but more or so how you play them.
In an increasingly globalized marketplace, are ideas about race and ethnicity changing? If so, how so?
They are changing, some in the right direction and some in the opposite. Take Target for example, people responded negatively when they made the choice to allow people who identified themselves as woman to use the woman’s restroom. Target, I’m assuming, are trying to see everyone as equal, but some see it as plain weird and uncalled for, for security reasons as well.
Is the United States a multicultural society? If so, has this diversity strengthened or weakened us – both with regard to life within our borders and our place in the world?
Yes, propinquity is the tendency to form friendships with others who share the same space such as residing in the same classroom or school.(Graham, Munniksma, &Juvonen) given that nowadays segregation is not as common as it once was. We tend to form friends with people who are experiencing the same circumstances. Biodiversity has strengthened us because we are starting to understand that we are similar in many ways.
