Interrogation or interviewing primarily involves obtaining incriminating or a confession statement from a suspect. The process also refers to interpellation or questioning. Interrogation is commonly used by states, law enforcing and criminal investigation departments that include the military, intelligence agencies and police officers. Subjects of interview mostly incorporate suspects anticipated to have engaged in a crime. Secondly, interviews play a critical role such as assisting the interviewer to gather sufficient information from victims and witnesses (Savino & Turvey, 2012). The Interrogation process involves distinct arrays of technique that range from planning a rapport aiming to outright torture. The primary and most important section of effective interrogation involves writing a statement that explains the suspect’s confession. The statement comprises the suspects alibi or knowledge of the incident.

The framework of the statement is well-formalized not to permit the suspect into alibi to alter the information provided in the foreseeable future. There are two forms that a suspect’s statement may take during the interrogation process. The first form takes a statement made by a suspect who denies and opposes any involvement or engagement in criminal activities, but explains his alibi and situations surrounding the criminal activity. Therefore, in this case it will be impossible for the guilty person to alter his confession once the critical information has been documented. This information is further used as a future reference necessary to discredit the suspect’s future intention to change the circumstance of the incident. However, should the guilty suspect attempts to alter his/her alibi, the original documented statement will be critical in discrediting the newly found information, incident or account. The form allows the investigator focus on key issues of approving and disapproving the information provided by the suspect (Savino & Turvey, 2012).

Statements can be documented in various forms based on the nature and scope of the case. Therefore, the interrogator may prefer the form of a statement taking into account the seriousness of the event. Other factors include the time factor, case type, the resources availability and lastly the agency’s preference (Gudjonsson, 2009).
