There are two parts to this assignment:
1. the presentation itself and how well it covers the major issues, and
2. how informative your supporting notes are.
The presentation will illustrate how well a student has considered the issues associated with the topic and how well they can explain it to an audience with no expertise in the area. It refers to Learning Outcomes 1-4:
• show that they understand the need for careful planning and prioritising of preservation activity;
• demonstrate an appreciation of the impact that environmental conditions have on the longevity of material;
• show that they are familiar with the major standards regarding storage, transport and handling of a range of materials; and
• show that they understand basic conservation principles.
5. Preservation management Introduction For successful preservation at the micro level, there needs to be management of resources at the organisational level. The particular organisation therefore needs the management skills of planning, developing policy and programs, cooperation, finding funding, and budgeting. The size and scope of this effort will of course vary considerably depending upon the organization and its aims and objectives. Not surprisingly, the National Archives of Australia are likely to have quite a different approach to planning and implementing a preservation strategy compared to the local public library or the school archive. However, any organization which takes on a preservation role, no matter how modest, will need to consider the development of a written preservation policy statement outlining how the task will be undertaken and the priority it has amongst all of the other programs in operation. Policy Today preservation policies need to encompass not just the physical collection but inevitably include the digital realm. This means there can be crossing of boundaries with say the IT area and the need to work cooperatively within the organisation to ensure overall preservation goals are understood by areas who mayhave felt little connection with this task. Again, another benefit of developing the policy is the involvement of such areas in discussing the manner in which the preservation goal is going to be achieved and the way in which it will fit into their normal work flows as well. Sometimes a separate Digital Preservation Policy is created in order to focus in on the special needs (and funding challenges) that this burgeoning area requires. Others have subsumed digital preservation within an existing policy, seeing it as just another format that needs to be dealt with, just like other more tangible materials. There are no right or wrong approaches – it is what best suits your organisation and its goals.
