The Big Easy
My favorite place is New Orleans, Louisiana, specifically the French Quarter. [OPENING ] On my first trip here, I was a very young adult traveling for the first time on a business trip. I had my first “real” job as a sales person for a scuba-diving equipment manufacturer. My next trip here was with my family. New Orleans had enchanted me on that first visit, and I couldn’t wait to return. [BACKGROUND] This essay conveys the magic and majesty of N.O. using my personal experience and four rhetorical terms. Please accompany me down memory lane to my favorite place. [THESIS]
The French Quarter is a sight to behold. The intricate scroll-work of the wrought iron balconies and gates, the beautiful gardens and parks with elaborate statuary, and the grand St. Louis Cathedral are all picturesque. As I walked through the French Quarter, I was particularly intrigued by the architecture of the historic buildings, many with beautiful brickwork and hardwood floors. There are also many cemeteries, known as “Cities of the Dead,” for they are the New York skyline of cemeteries, each with massive mausoleums and headstones. [METAPHOR] New Orleans buries its dead above ground for practical reasons, mostly flooding. These above-ground cemeteries are large and city-like with their different graves reflecting the social statuses of their inhabitants.
Like any city, New Orleans has many sounds such as traffic and the noise from public transportation, but unlike most cities, New Orleans also has sounds that belong only to her. Tour operators offer voodoo tours and ghost walks, complete with chanting and funeral processions to the Cities of the Dead. Often a jazz band follows the casket to celebrate the life of the newly departed. New Orleans is known as a city that embraces music, and music can be found everywhere. Often, a saxophone can be heard wailing into the wee hours of the night. [PERSONIFICATION]
On my most recent trip to New Orleans, we took a swamp tour. Our Cajun guide steered our pontoon boat through the thick swamps, right into an alligator nesting area. We were invited to feed the gators raw chicken, and as they thrashed against each other, fighting over the food, the pontoon boat rocked back and forth. The force of the alligators’ bodies against the sides of the boat was like a boulder crushing a tin can. [SIMILE] We were terrified and exhilarated.
The smells here can overwhelm the senses: seafood and heavy pepper in the jambalaya; damp, swampy odors from the waterfront; the aroma of thick cigarette smoke and booze from any bar in the Quarter at any given time. A memory that will stay with me is the time my family took the red eye flight into New Orleans, eager to see and experience as much as possible on our first day in the city. It was June and hot and sticky outside. We boarded the streetcar and rode the line through the Garden District. We had seven adults and two infants traveling together. Due to our exhaustion from traveling all night, combined with the summer heat, we were all dozing off on the streetcar ride, only to be awakened by the scent of burning wood from the brake system of the vintage streetcars.
Comparable to the rich sounds are the flavors, for tantalizing treats tempt every tongue. [ALLITERATION] The food selection in New Orleans is unlimited. There are mouthwatering French beignets, Café Au Laits, seasonally fresh seafood, and my personal favorite, the Po’ Boy sandwich. I enjoyed the Hurricane punch from Pat O’Brien’s, and the pasta with alfredo sauce, clams, and flaky baguettes. No visit to New Orleans is complete without sampling as many signature dishes as possible. You can find crispy alligator on a stick, which really does taste like chicken, or savory crawfish etouffee. Red beans and rice with spicy sausage is always a hit, as is gumbo. New Orleans appeals to me in so many ways; it calls me to visit again. [CLOSING]
