Connectivity and work dominance

To stay connected in the workplace people embracing technological advancement is inevitable for organizations. The face of many successful organizations has changed due to the persistent use of advancements in technology. It is clear in our modern day that technology has impacted organization’s businesses as much as technology has also changed the lives of those that use it in organizations (Lee 2016). The article “Connectivity and work dominance: Panacea or pariah” by Stoner, Stephens and McGowan best explains this impact. The impact is shown through using the concept of the weather work-connecting technologies (WCT) to explain the changes in the business environment. Changes in the business environment and the work-connecting technologies is the reason there is a disparity between professionals and the young managers in their work-life balance and the manner in which they use technology. This paper will show us the impact of the decisions that the new generation professionals have made concerning their use of technology as well as the negative and positive perspectives that different professional groups that made decisions to go beyond the set boundaries and expanded their connectivity.
Discussion of the Topic {third Person}
Connectivity and work dominance was a topic that was researched by Stoner, Stephens and McGowan so that they can show the impact that the work-connecting technologies and the changes that are takin place in the organization will have on the organization itself as well as the employees working in the organization. The problem addressed in this research is the manner in which technology is increasing the workloads in organizations and this causes people to have busy and long hours that affect the manner that people connect with other people as well their families after work. The professionals and the young managers are in a place where they have to choose between their families and career advancements and each of this have negative and positive impact. The young managers and the professionals were targeted since they are mostly affected by the WCT. The WCT include cell phones, laptops, and the Internet.
Results, Findings, and Conclusions {third Person
The research includes 14 WCT and the response of those that admitted they use the WCT in their organization. The results were that the most used WCT are voice mail, E-mail, Fax, computers the least used included PDA, Pager, and Groupware. People now use the computers especially in their homes and have wireless networks. The findings showed that due to use of wireless networks in the homes and in their workplaces people are using most hours to work in their workplaces and in homes. As per the professionals that responded, this was a better chance for them to work for more hours. This showed how the WCT is affecting the manner that people are dependent on technology and they have no or little time to spend and connect with their families and contribute to the raising of their children. This is important to the professionals as it shows the negative and positive effects of the manner that they allow technology to take over their lives.
Implications for Professional Development (first Person)
From this I learnt that it is hard to balance the family life and career life trade-off and there are several things that one should consider before they can make decisions on what they should choose (Stoner, Stephens, & McGowan 2009). To develop professionally I will have to balance between family and my career this will be ensuring that I accomplish all that I have to do at work and avoid taking work home since it will affect my family life and it may lead to complications in the future that can lead to abandoning of my career or my family and I would not want it to get to that.
Conclusion
In conclusion WCT have led to success and advancement in organizations but it can bring negative effects if the employees and the organization spends much time in the technological and career advancement. There need to be a balance and a line that should be drawn in order to separate work hours and family hours this will be to enhance connectivity and reduce full dominance of work in people’s lives.
