In what ways are storytelling in Mr Pip therapeutic? A discussion of the healing power of narrative. Start off with something along the lines of : “Having read ‘Mr Pip’ and thought about it in terms of narrative ambiguity, a very particular strand of its meaning, I then became aware of the sheer number of stories and storytelling in the novel. So…I wanted to develop my very precise and focused thinking on the novel to embrace something broader and more philosophical.” (400-500) 2.Then go into: Got me interested in why stories are told. Why do people tell stories, what is the point of ‘narrative’, etc. ? (Look at wiki on ‘Storytelling’…many reasons for telling of stories, including therapy and establishing of identity and selfhood.) Preservation of cultures, therapy (see Grosz). Also see James Wood and ‘The Kiss’, then apply the ideas that come from your reading back to ‘Mr Pip’. (800-1200) 3. Reasons for storytelling in ‘Mr Pip’: (i) Education (ii) Preservation of culture (Dolores and Mr Watts) (iii) Therapy…(a) generally therapeutic (b) Therapy for Matilda – she is able to survive the atrocious experiences on the island through telling a story about it (c) Lloyd Jones is able to express feelings about his identity and being an Australian by writing a story about Matilda telling her story… But it should be structured and constructed like a college level essay with: (more information to be attached by account) acknowledgements abstract Introduction sections conclusion bibliography I personally write with a casual tone of voice, nothing extremely wordy but should use english vocab that works well with description and comparisons of novels.
There should be constant references to the sources I gave above and a paragraph somewhere in between about storytelling and its origin.
