Table of contents

A clear table of contents should be included that presents numbered section and sub-section headings along with their page numbers.  This will set out the scope and structure of the project clearly in the reader’s mind.  Headings given here should correspond to those used in the text.  In the text you need to establish a consistent format for the different levels of headings.

 Figures and tables

If you are including these in your text, they should be numbered and listed after the table of contents in the order in which they appear in the text.  The numbering and legends of tables in the text must match the list given here.

 Abbreviations

If you have used a lot of abbreviations in the text, then you may wish to include a list of abbreviations here.  If not, all acronyms and abbreviations must be defined in the text and at the first instance of use.

Chapter 1 Introduction

In this part of your project you are setting out what you did and why.  The introduction should include the following:

• Aims and objectives: you need to set out your overall research question or hypothesis and the specific objectives that derive from this. Many people like to place these at the end and the introduction should inexorably build up to them.
• Description and discussion of background context to your chosen topic: for instance why and how a particular issue is of growing concern, the context, and current policy frameworks.
• A justification for your research question; you need to provide a rationale for why your research needed doing. This should cover both its significance in your field of work (you might have covered this in your background) Why does your research matter?  Why did it need doing?  What was the gap/puzzle/problem/controversy that you addressed?  In answering these questions you should review and discuss the relevant literature to identify any key issues and/or debates.  How your proposed research is going to make a contribution to the literature.  What you hope to achieve with the results of the study?

Chapter 2  Literature review.

Key literature should be reviewed and cited and any major issues or debates identified.

You will need to provide your ideas on the quality of literature available, whether it is plentiful or scarce, who the main commentators are, and what are the main debates.

 Chapter 3  Methodology/approach and methods

In this section you are describing how you answered your research question.  You should describe your overall approach, as well as the specific methods used: interviews, focus groups or questionnaires.  You need to provide evidence of your critical understanding of the strengths, weakness and appropriate applications of particular methods and provide a clear justification of your choice of study design, sampling etc.  If you are using a particular theoretical framework perspective, e.g. `participatory`, `action research`, or `survey research` you should again describe this and defend your choice.  Your methods section should be fully referenced to support your discussion and choice of specific methods.
