Child Development Final Gender identity among children and adolescents is one of the most controversial subjects facing parents and society as a whole today. Since Gender Identity Disorder (GID) became marked as a disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4 th Edition) (DSM-IV)(APA, 1994) there has been much uproar in instilling “normalcy” back into gender variant children(SITE). Gerald Mallon and Teresa DeCrescenzo further studied transgender children, more specifically children’s inability to deal with an environment where there is no “goodness of fit.” Mallon and DeCrescenzo focused much of their research on the question “why are gender variant children so disturbing to people?” By age three children can identify their sex and if they choose to not accept their inherently born sexual identity they are labeled as “gender dysphoric.” (SITE)Such conscious choices to deviate from social norms in both behaviors and mannerisms are cause for concern in a society where non-adaptation to society is alarming. Mallon and DeCrescenzo did not run any specific studies of their own however they did research many case studies of specific transgendered children. Each study revealed that a child’s forced adaptation to society and desire to please parents leads to severe depression and other psychological issues. This leads to low self-esteem in young children, which eventually turns into self-hatred as adults.(SITE) Mallon and DeCrescenzo study offers a very differential approach to gender identity that much research fails to account for-showing no distinction between gender
