In each field of advanced nursing there are a list of core competencies that must be implemented in the education model. Advanced nursing is divided into two categories indirect care provider roles and direct care provider roles. Indirect care provider roles consist of the nurseadministrators, nurse educators, and nurse informaticist. Direct care provider roles consist of the nurse practitioner with subcategories of family, adult, and gerontology.

In this paper I will focus on the family nurse practitioner and nurse administrator core competencies. I will start by listing each advanced nursing roles core competencies. I will then follow by comparing the similarities and the differences not only in the competencies, but how they are implemented in the work environment.

The nurse practitioner has a total of nine competency areas which are as follows: scientific foundation; leadership; quality; practice inquiry; technology and information literacy; policy; health delivery systems; ethics; and independent practice. In each one of these nine competency areas there are nurse practitioner general competencies, and there are individualized competencies depending on the specialization followed.
