In this paper you will assess how the successor states of the Mongol empire ruled the sedentary world by balancing the need to adapt to their new cultural contexts with the need to maintain Mongol institutions. Based on your readings in Morgan’s The Mongols, as well as Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta, and class lectures, describes ways in which the Mongol successor states from 1260 to 1335 adapted to their local cultural environment, and ways in which they maintained distinctively Mongol institutions. Then assess the balance between these two different sides of the Mongol khanates.
