(1) Research details about your choice of a mission using on-line sources. All of these projects
maintain dedicated web pages, some very detailed. Background information about the target can
be obtained from the textbook as well. Note that while the Wiki entry for each mission is a good
general reference, Wikipedia content is not sufficient – you must also draw from the mission web
pages as well.
(2) Prepare your 5-page report by describing the following three basic attributes of each
“experiment”:
(a) The scientific objectives of the mission — Why was this space probe launched (chosen) ?
(b) The mission profile — How did or will this probe accomplish its objectives ?
(c) The experimental aspects — What science instruments were included in this mission ?
What observations or experiments were or will be conducted ?
(3) Use a cover page, which I will provide. The cover page is a form on which basic information
about the mission is presented.
Formatting instructions:
1) Your report is to be a 5-page paper. The cover page does not count towards the total page
number.
2) A title and your name should be placed at the top of the first text page.
3) Line spacing: You may use single or 1.5 line spacing. Do NOT double, triple or quadruple
space the text.
4) Margins: Set to 1.0 inches left, right, top, bottom.
5) Pictures or tables may be embedded within the text, to illustrate significant aspects of your
selected mission. Please do not overuse these inserts. Obviously, the more graphics included,
the less text one needs to prepare. Including too many images will reduce your score.
6) Prepare the cover page by filling in the table on the blank cover page found on MyPortal.
7) Please indicate your source(s) at the end of the paper. Most of you will have used a few web
pages from which you drew most of your information. You must utilize mission web pages, not
just Wikipedia. Points will be subtracted if you do not include a bibliography.
8) Restrict use of quotations. I am interested in your perspective and understanding of these
missions of exploration. Citing large blocks of text extracted from a source bounded by
quotation marks does not demonstrate those abilities.
9) You may of course submit more than 5 pages in your report; the 5-page lower limit is set so that
I can adequately assess everyone’s work. Larger reports can receive bonus points.
