4g Mobile Wireless . Over the past two decades mobile communication has gone from expensive luxury item to an affordable and critical component for businesses and every day personal entertainment and networking use.

The astounding speed at which new technology emerges continually increases the requirements that need to be met by the major cellular carriers. Cell phones that were once large, bulky, and only capable of voice communication are now palm held computers called smartphones that are capable of much more than just voice service.

With these devices have come the demands for higher user and bandwidth capacity networks that can connect individuals over long distances to each other, and access to information and multimedia entertainment, regardless of location. This type of service requires fourth generation, or 4G, of mobile wireless technology standards.

So far, there have been four major revisions of technical requirements for cellular networks. 4G is the successor of 3G, 2G, and 1G families of technical performance standards for wireless mobile service set forth by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Like its predecessors, 4G technologies embarks on the task of overcoming the limitations that plague previous generations and enable faster speeds, new applications, services and features currently unavailable, while increasing the security and quality of service.

The diagram above shows the evolution of wireless mobile technology. The first generation (1G) of mobile wireless service was introduced in the early 1980’s. It used analog signaling and was only capable of data transmission well below 10 kbps. In 1990 came the second generation (2G) standards, which changed from analog to digital radio transmission. The commonly used technologies used were GSM and CDMA, which achieved speeds of 10 kbps.

This provided the ability to use SMS service for sending text messages and low quality pictures. In the mid 1990’s there was a second generation transitional period (2.5G) which saw the implementation of upgraded technology to bridge the gap to the third generation of mobile wireless standards.

GSM made way for GPRS and CMDA was revised to increased access speeds to 300-500 Kbps, which would eventually become the third generation standard in 2000.

They key goal of 2.5G and 3G was to achieve a substantial in quality and entertainment value with web access, streaming media, and video telephone calls.
