This assignment is an original research project on Early American History covering the years 1754-1800, and an exercise in critically analyzing history as change over time.

1. Original research. Select a topic of your own choosing from between 1754 and 1800, and conduct enough original research to analyze and write a well-informed essay on this topic. Your research materials should consist of scholarly books and articles. Only scholarly Internet resources which have been previously been discussed with and approved by me are acceptable.

In your opening paragraph, clearly identify the “what,” where,” and “when” of your topic, as well as your thesis of why this topic, and any key associated issues, individuals or events, are historically important for our understanding of American history.

2. Critical analysis. Critically analyze how and why your research topic and any key associated issues, individuals or events changed American society over time, without reference to the present. Put differently, what changes occurred over a specific period of time as the result of this topic and its key associated issues, individuals or events? How did your topic impact the lives of people living in that specific place and time?

Requirements.

1. Your essay must be entirely your own original writing.

All writing that is not your own original writing must appear in quotation marks and be properly cited. Copying word-for-word or paraphrasing material from Internet or textual sources, regardless of whether these sources are cited, is considered plagiarism under OCC’s policies regarding Academic Integrity.

2. Your essay must be a minimum of 5 full double-spaced pages long, with no extra spaces between paragraphs. Use a standard font and font size and standard margins.

2. Support your analysis with short, well-chosen references to and/or quotations from at least one assigned primary document.

4. Include a properly formatted Works Cited page or Bibliography for all texts or documents used in the research and writing of your essay. You may use the MLA, APA or Chicago Manual style, whichever format you are most familiar with.

5. Essays must be turned in, in class. Unless previously authorized, emailed essays or essays left in my mailbox will not be accepted. Extensions must be discussed with and approved by me before the due date, and will be granted only for personal or family emergencies.
